Domestic violence in Slovenia is a serious social issue that often remains hidden, as many victims do not report it due to fear, shame, or lack of trust in institutions. Official statistics show that thousands of cases are handled each year, but the real number is believed to be much higher.
The main causes of domestic violence include poor interpersonal relationships, stress, alcohol and substance abuse, jealousy, and exposure to violence in childhood. Social factors, such as gender inequality and the normalisation of violence, also play an important role.
The consequences of violence are severe. Victims may suffer physical injuries, as well as psychological effects such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and even suicidal thoughts. Violence also leads to social isolation and damaged relationships.
Children are particularly vulnerable, as exposure to violence can negatively affect their development and increase the risk of repeating violent behaviour later in life.
Preventing domestic violence requires awareness, education, timely support for victims, and effective institutional response. It is essential that society does not tolerate violence and actively encourages reporting and support for victims.
